MP: 5 Cubs Born To Female Cheetah Nirva, Kuno Cheetah Population Grows To 29
Bhopal: South African female cheetah Nirva on Sunday gave birth to five cubs, taking the big cat population in the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district to 29.
This was the second litter of Nirva.
The cheetah mother was believed to have killed her two cubs, born in her first litter some months ago in Kuno National Park.
Union forest and environment minister Bhupendra Yadav informed about the birth of five cubs in a post on X on Sunday.
“Please join me in welcoming five precious new lives in Kuno National Park.
In the lap of their mother Nirva, a 5-year-old brought from Mapesu Reserve in South Africa, these cubs remind us of the beauty and resilience of nature. May they grow strong, swift, and free, carrying on the legacy of their kind in India.
Let us celebrate the hope and future they bring”, he said in his post.
With the birth of five cubs, the cheetah population in Kuno National Park has now increased to 29.
Two male cheetahs, Pavak and Prabhas, have recently been shifted to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh from Kuno National Park.
Nirva was brought to Kuno National Park along with 11 other cheetahs from South Africa in February 2023.
In September 2022, eight cheetahs were brought to the Kuno National Park from Namibia in the first intercontinental translocation of carnivores under the cheetah introduction project of India.
